Setting Up Your Company's First Web Site

Companies looking to create their first Web site should hire a professional programmer, unless a basic site is their goal. They should find out if their Web host has an online program like WebsiteCreator from 1and1.com, which simplifies set up by offering numerous templates and color schemes, among other tools. They could also use Web site editors that provide customized templates, such as Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver, and NetObjects Fusion. Companies must first determine whether their site will be used for eCommerce or to provide information, product lists, or business descriptions. They must also figure out if e-mail forms, shopping carts, live chat, or surveys will be used to interact with visitors. Additionally, they must determine how many Web pages they will need based on these initial decisions, taking care to include the basic Introduction, About Us, and Contact Us pages. Using their Web software, companies can then work on design, navigation functions, and content. They would be wise to keep pages and text short, have a purpose and conclusion for each page, proofread before publishing, and check each link and image after publication.
