Detroit Students Learn Business Basics Through the MACPA Accounting Blitz

Nearly 1,500 metro Detroit elementary- and middle-school students were delighted to welcome CPAs into their classrooms this spring for the MACPA Accounting Blitz, held in conjunction with Junior Achievement (JA). Volunteers visited Beckham Elementary, Bennett Elementary and Miller Middle School to spend a day teaching students financial basics and business fundamentals.

Students, teachers and volunteers alike raved about the program.

“I had a good time at the school,” said a volunteer in a first-grade classroom. “The students really seemed happy to have me there and I believe they truly enjoyed the JA activity.”

High Praise for JA Blitz
Lenore Litwin, vice president of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan, presented the MACPA with the President’s Volunteer Service Award on behalf of the President of the United States at the Spring Members Advisory Forum on May 10, 2006 in Lansing. Junior Achievement also presented the MACPA with its Impact Award on May 11, 2006 at the Detroit Yacht Club. The MACPA is the only association to receive the honor this year.

Each year, the program volunteers give positive feedback from their experience. Their commitment offers students an opportunity to learn from experts in the field, bringing awareness of the vast opportunities available through a career in business.

In addition to Detroit, the MACPA and Junior Achievement offer the Blitz in various Michigan cities throughout the year, including: Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw and Traverse City.

Those interested in volunteering for the program in one of these cities can sign up now. Volunteering is easy! JA provides training and classroom materials/lessons. You can even choose the school and grade level. You do not have to be a CPA to volunteer, and you are welcome to bring a friend or colleague along to teach with you. As a volunteer, you just may plant the seed for future accounting professionals!
