Long before the onset of term limits, the age of lobbyists or political action committees (PACs), President Abraham Lincoln warned: “Those who choose not to participate in democracy are doomed to be controlled by those who do.” Today's political action committees offer a viable way for individuals to participate in democracy by mobilizing their political opinions.

MACPA established its own PAC with the sole purpose of ensuring you have a vehicle for active participation in democracy.

There is no time when the presence of a PAC is more strongly felt than during campaign season – and that is why it is vitally important the MACPA PAC has the support of all members.

In 2003, fewer than eight percent of members contributed to the MACPA PAC. That means that only 1,280 out of 16,000 members chose to protect and advance our profession in Michigan last year.

Decisions made in the political process affect all CPAs. Your contribution is necessary to ensure the accounting profession continues to have a strong presence in Michigan’s legislative and regulatory activities.

In November 2002, more than $73 million was spent on the campaigns to elect the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, 38 state senators and 110 state representatives. Costly campaigns require strong PAC support.

With just six months until the election, campaigns are in full swing. With your help, the MACPA PAC will combine your contribution with those of your colleagues allowing the MACPA PAC to have a far greater impact on the candidates we support. These candidates understand that the support comes from an association of 16,000 Michigan CPAs who have an interest in issues of importance to the accounting profession.

In 2003, the MACPA PAC established the Capitol Club, an elite donor program designed to recognize leaders of the CPA profession who know the value of promoting the profession’s interests in Lansing. Your $100, $250, or $500 contribution entitles you to a one-year membership in the MACPA PAC Capitol Club and you will also receive a lapel pin to signify your high level of support.
