E-File Stats Reported; Michigan 2nd in
Nation According to the Michigan Department of Treasury, more than 2.4 million Michigan taxpayers e-filed their 2003 income tax returns this year. This result placed Michigan second in the nation behind California when it comes to e-filing. “Having reached over 2.4 million e-filers has been an important milestone. We’ve always been one of the top four e-filing states, but we still have much ground to gain,” said Terry Stanton, public information officer for the Michigan Department of Treasury. “We expect many more returns and extensions in the next couple of months and we hope preparers will continue to e-file.” Approximately 95 percent of all Michigan income tax returns are eligible for e-file. Treasury will continue to accept 2003 tax returns via e-file through October 15, 2004. Treasury reported a budget savings exceeding $3.5 million due to the resulting reduction in printing and mailing costs, a trimming down in customer service center and tax processing demands by taxpayers and preparers. Nationally, the IRS reported more than 51.7 million returns were e-filed, representing a 12 percent increase from last year. A statistical analysis published on the IRS web site identifies the increases by filing category. “It would have been difficult to meet our goals without the cooperation of the MACPA,” said Stanton. “We appreciate the leadership and the members who put their fingers to their keyboards and made this milestone possible.” The MACPA continues to serve as your resource for e-file education, resources and general information.
