New Laws Beef Up Integrity of the CPA, Protect Public
Michigan CPAs and business leaders collaborated on a legislative effort that
culminated on December 19. Governor Jennifer Granholm signed a package of
legislation that allows CPAs and individuals employed by CPAs to disclose
protected information in instances of federal, state or local law
violations; requires CPA firm enrollment in a peer review program to enhance
the quality of accounting, auditing and attest services; and increases
enforcement of unlicensed activity or “copycat CPAs.” For more details on
these new laws, including additional provisions impacting the CPA profession
and the public, visit MACPA’s

Familiar with the CPA Exam Changes? Get an Inside Look
at One of the Biggest
Differences
As you probably already know, the CPA Exam went computerized in April 2004
and underwent a number of revisions. The least of which is students are now
seated in front of a computer when taking the exam; other updates to the
exam affect the way students study for the exam. Your students have
questions about these changes – do you have the answers? Visit the
MACPA web
site for comprehensive information about the computerized exam. Some of the
changes include: newly tested content, a new testing medium called
simulations and the added pressure of a countdown clock, according to an
article from Becker CPA. With the exception of Business Environment &
Concepts, simulations appear in all sections of the exam. Becker CPA
recommends students are extremely familiar with simulations before sitting
for the exam. Read the
entire article from Becker CPA for more information
on simulations and how to get prepared for them.

Advice on the Accounting Profession for Students
The MACPA is offering two new opportunities for students to learn what it
will be like once they are working in the real world as CPAs. Advice from a
Professional is a column featured in each issue of Student E-News, which
features the story of a CPA or accounting professional, how they got where
they are today, their tips and advice for up-and-coming professionals and
more.
Access past columns on the
MACPA web site. Students are also invited to
submit questions they may have about the profession, the CPA exam – anything
they want to know that relates to their future profession as a CPA or
accounting professional. The questions will be answered by MACPA members and
published in Student E-News. If you have students interested in submitting a
question, please e-mail the question to
Kristen Benvenuti.

Minority Conference Big Hit With College Students
Nearly 70 minority college students now know just how exciting the CPA
profession can be. “The conference was very informative and encouraging.
This was excellent,” said a student from Wayne State University about the
first-ever Minority Accounting College Leadership Conference which was held
on March 31 at Walsh College for minority students pursuing a degree in
accounting. Students heard several presentations, including: Internal
Revenue Service Fraud Training Program; Preparing to Pass the CPA Exam; and
Step Up to Success where students heard from a panel of young minority
professionals currently in the process of earning their CPA licenses and
newly certified minority CPAs. The MACPA, along with the National
Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and Walsh College, created the
conference to show what it takes to become a CPA and why students should go
that extra mile to become certified. “I learned a great deal of information
that will help me in preparing to be a CPA,” said a student from Baker
College.
