Governor
Presents Proposed Budget
Governor Jennifer Granholm presented her
proposed 2009 state budget last Thursday. The fiscal year 2009 budget
recommendation is focused on the four priorities the Governor outlined in
her State of the State address: a job for every worker, a quality education
for every child, health care for every family, and safe places to live and
work. Her proposal includes a $100 million deposit in the state’s “rainy
day” fund, $235 million in additional reductions, savings and reforms, and a
two-year economic stimulus package of more than $1.8 billion. For more

New Coalition Focuses
on Public Sector Performance
Nine leading state and local public interest associations, including the
Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), have joined forces to create
a
commission to develop a national principles-based framework for public
sector performance measurement and management. Although performance
management has increasingly become a standard practice among state and local
governments, there is no commonly accepted framework or set of guidelines.
The framework is intended to assist governments in designing new performance
measurement and management systems, and assessing their existing systems.
Information on the Commission’s progress will be posted on its web site at
www.PMCommission.org.

Worthwhile Small
Business Technologies
Experts say there are 10 technologies that can simplify day-to-day
operations for small- and medium-sized enterprises. Remote desktop
technology is one of them. Offerings such as Microsoft Windows Terminal
Server allow computers to be operated remotely. Another tool well-suited for
small organizations is desktop sharing software.
