Advice from a Professional: David Hammel Talks Flexibility
David J. Hammel, CPA, CFE Forensic Accountant at Godfrey, Hammel, Danneels & Company 30 years in the profession
Flexibility was one of the driving forces that led David Hammel to the path
of accounting. Throughout college, he knew he wanted some form of business
degree.
“I felt that if I had an accounting degree, I at least came out of school
with a skill that I could use to find a job fairly easy, which was the
case,” Hammel said.
Today Hammel still finds it to be true that he has more flexibility as an
accounting professional – “I’m not limited to only debits and credits,” he
added.
| |
Hammel’s Education Hammel graduated from John Carroll University, where he majored in
accounting.
“I think the accounting degree went hand-in-hand with pursuing the CPA
license,” he said.
In addition to being a CPA, Hammel is also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
Hammel Answers: Why Be a CPA?
A CPA has real value in the business world, Hammel said, whether you
continue in the accounting profession or not.
“Many CEOs and COOs have backgrounds in accounting and are also CPAs,”
Hammel said. “It can become ‘your unfair advantage’ to your professional
work.”
His Exciting Career as a Forensic Accountant
Hammel is the principal in the Consulting Practice Group of Godfrey, Hammel,
Danneels & Company. He deals primarily with forensic investigations, fraud
and embezzlement, transactional analysis and expert testimony – aka white
collar crime.
“What I like most is my job is never boring,” he said. “I deal with people
and entities that steal and cheat! I enjoy what I do and don’t consider my
work a job.”
Hammels said it took hard work to get where he is, and he finds his work to
be very rewarding.
“My accounting background gave me the foundation to hone my skills in the
area of forensic accounting work,” he said. |
