Enhance Your Resume – Volunteer With the MACPA
Worried about writing your first resume? Not sure if you have enough work
experience? Don’t worry - employers are interested in your skills, not if
you were paid to do them. Turn to the MACPA for great resume building
volunteer opportunities. Teach youngsters business basics by volunteering
for the MACPA Accounting Blitz, in partnership with Junior Achievement.
Travel to local schools and spread your knowledge of accounting while honing
your speaking skills. To learn more about the accounting blitz, or to
volunteer, visit the
MACPA
web site.
The Accounting Aid Society Tax Assistance Program is another great
opportunity to put your accounting knowledge to use by helping to prepare
tax returns for low income individuals in the Metro Detroit area. The MACPA
is partnering with the Accounting Aid Society for three Saturdays in
February at Focus: HOPE in Detroit. Training will be provided for all
volunteers by the MACPA and Accounting Aid Society. If you are interested

Tax Hike + Reforms =
Agreement; State Avoids Crippling Shutdown
Michigan’s budget crisis was averted in the wee hours today, as legislators
and the Governor agreed on a combination of tax increases and reforms to
stave off a government shutdown. At about 4:20 a.m. Monday morning, State
Senators, State Representatives, and Gov. Jennifer Granholm completed work
on an array of government reforms and tax measures. The tax increases
consist of an income tax hike and a new tax on services (see subsequent
article). For more on the reforms and tax increases, read a
detailed
overview on the MACPA web site.

New Sales Tax on
Services Key to State Budget Deal
Initial interpretation of a new tax on services, passed by the State
Legislature in the early morning hours on Monday, October 1, indicates that
CPA services such as tax preparation, accounting and auditing will not
be subject to the new service tax. However, consulting services and
investment advice services are subject to the new tax, both of which may
directly impact the CPA profession. Effective December 1, 2007, the new
service tax will generate an estimated $613.8 million in the portion of
fiscal year (FY) 2008 it will be collected in. Anticipated revenue balloons
to $751 million for the full FY 2009 – clearly a significant portion of the
revenue enhancements contained in the late-night deal. Coupled with an
income tax hike and government reforms, the service tax was part of a
three-fold deal to avert a government shutdown. This
article
provides details on the new tax measure, including a list of taxable
services.

school.
Trepeck on Making a Difference as A CPA
She likes to think that she has made a difference for her clients during her 36
years as a CPA. Helping them accomplish what they wanted for themselves was
ALWAYS her goal. Additionally, making a difference for the community through

help communities and profession. Through innovative programs and their implementation, she
