Cincinnati, Phoenix and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. That year, there were 25,000
tax returns filed electronically. The e-file program expanded nationwide in
1990 and 4.2 million tax returns were filed. In 2007, e-file totaled nearly

Advice From a
Professional
Steven Lane
Accounting Consultant
The Siegfried Group (Detroit Office)
Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Western Michigan University
Years in profession: 14+
Steven Lane, CPA, became a certified public accountant because he liked
math in high school and was more analytical in his thinking versus creative.
He graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelors in Accounting
and then completed the CPA exam to earn his CPA designation. Lane recommends
pursuing a CPA license because it demonstrates commitment, knowledge and is
highly sought in public and private accounting. He is currently a director
at The Siegfried Group, an accounting resourcing firm in Detroit. He
provides temporary services to fortune 500/1000 companies during critical
times of need. “I obtain a great deal of experience working with numerous
companies of different sizes, on different projects. I love the opportunity
to display expertise in a variety of areas to help clients achieve their
targeted goals,” Lane commented.
Lane on the benefits of becoming a CPA
There are many benefits to becoming a CPA. “Employment opportunities;
obtaining the CPA designation opens many doors for extended career
development,” said Lane. He also noted that in his line of work, clients
strongly prefer working with certified public accountants when choosing
professionals for special projects.
Lane’s recommendations for student’s studying to be a CPA
He said that if you enjoy your classes in college and have a passion for the
profession, you will find a very rewarding career as an accountant. Lane’s
advice, “Remain active in networking circles, continue to develop strong
analytical and communication skills, and develop short and long term goals.”
Lane’s tips for students studying for the CPA exam
“Remain focused on progress, not perfection, when studying. You will never
fully master every rule or concept. If you need outside motivation take an
external review course,” said Lane. He recommends Becker CPA Review or going
through Walsh College for help.
Additional thoughts from Lane on becoming a CPA
“Dedication to accounting provides future leadership and management
opportunities, which are highly sought by the public and can be very
rewarding financially,” Lane said.
