Economic Stimulus: Tax Rebate Deal Announced
Last week,
President George Bush reached an agreement with Congressional leaders
on an
economic growth package. The growth plan provides $100 billion of
temporary tax relief that will allow Americans to keep or spend more of
their incomes. Individuals who pay income taxes would get up to $600,
working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per
child under the agreement. Workers who make at least $3,000 but don't
pay taxes would get $300 rebates. The Department of Treasury has
released a
fact sheet, which provides examples of how the economic growth
package will benefit Americans. The package also includes tax provisions
for businesses.

Advice From a
Professional
Vincent Jonna
Audit Associate
Clayton & McKervey P.C.
Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Western Michigan University
Master in Accounting, University of Michigan Dearborn
Years in profession: 3
The reasons Vincent Jonna decided to pursue his CPA designation were two
fold: flexibility and reliability. "It appears that in accounting there is
job security and relatively easy access to other job markets where everyone
seems to appreciate the skills that accountants incur in the profession,"
said Jonna. He is currently an audit associate with Clayton & McKervey,
where he finds the work environment and diversity of clients the most
enjoyable part of his job. However, he feels accounting is under valued by
most people in terms of business and personal matters.
Jonna on
pursuing a CPA license and the benefits
Jonna said pursing a CPA license is a hard decision to make because it is
overwhelming, but the opportunities that unfold make it worth it. "You will
be surprised at how much a career in accounting can benefit any dream you
have," said Jonna. The benefits also make the hard work worthwhile. He said
there is a high learning curve in the accounting profession. Plus, the
profession is always changing, which makes the work challenging.
Jonna's recommendations for student’s studying to be a CPA
He said to avoid falling into the idea that accounting is boring. "Actually,
doing the work is much more engaging than studying, with the exception of
studying accounting theories. For example, I have witnessed some heated
discussions on valuation and presentations which were engaging to many who
at first believed the topic to be boring. Also, meeting people who work in
auditing and accounting will make you feel better about how much people
enjoy their jobs and what they do and not just the money they make, Jonna
commented.
Jonna's tips for students studying for the CPA exam
He said that he used many different mediums to help him understand the
material. "I watched films, read the books, did the exercises, made note
cards, used mnemonics, and even recorded myself and then played it back
while in the car to help get the material down." He said avoid focusing too
hard on obscure questions, rather pay the most attention on common questions
as seen in Becker and other review courses.

Find Your
First Finance Job
You're about to graduate with a finance, accounting,
economics or business degree. How do you parlay that achievement into a
great job? Just as you did when you wrote all those term papers, the first
step is to pick a topic, or in this case, a niche. Finance degrees usually
lead to jobs with corporations or financial institutions. Corporate jobs
include analysts, who make strategic business decisions, and accountants,
who budget and track spending. At financial institutions and insurance
companies, work is transaction-related. You could evaluate risk as an
underwriter, work in financial planning or sell stock. Read this article in
its entirety at
