2009 MACPA Awards & Recognitions

On October 5, 2009 the MACPA honored members who exhibited exemplary service over the past year at the annual Awards Dinner. This elegant event was hosted at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham and also featured a Silent Auction to benefit the Michigan Accountancy Foundation (MAF) Fifth/Graduate Year Scholarship Program.
The Silent Auction was a great success, generating more than $8,000 for the scholarship program. The 2009 Scholarship recipients are recognized on the MACPA’s website. In recognition for their generous support of the MAF scholarship program, the MACPA would like to thank the following organizations and individuals: Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Paul Goebel Group, Rehmann, Robert Bogan and the family of Eleanore Kline.

Thomas Beard, managing partner at Godfrey Hammel Danneels & Co, focused on big picture issues during his year as chair. Helping members during this challenging economic period was a top priority for Tom and he was influential in developing the MACPA’s Economic Crisis Resource Center. He was presented with a special legislative tribute recognizing his knowledge and expertise in the areas of business development, tax and succession planning for family businesses in various industries was relied upon heavily by members of the Michigan state government.

Gail Sparks Pitts is the controller for Oakland Community College. Serving as chair of the MACPA in 2007-2008, Gail was first African American female to serve as chair of any state CPA society. Through her many years of involvement in MACPA, Gail has helped the Association build upon its diversity initiatives. A past president and founder of the Greater Lansing Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants, Gail has been instrumental in efforts to strengthen our ties with the National Association of Black Accountants. Gail has also demonstrated a high level of commitment and devotion to students, recruiting them for opportunities in the profession, as well as understanding the need to build for the future of the MACPA and the profession.

Ernest Almonte

 

 

 

 

 

Ernest Almonte, 2008-2009 Chair of the AICPA, is auditor general in the State of Rhode Island. His commitment to state societies has given a voice, and an opportunity for state societies to play a major role as the profession moves forward. Ernie focuses a great deal of attention on students, and he is a tremendous resource and advocate for CPAs in the early stages of their careers. He launched the AICPA Leadership Academy, an intensive program designed to develop the leadership skills of young CPAs and help them build a strong mentoring network. He is a true leader of the profession.

Ronald Taylor is director of recruiting operations and diversity with Eisner, a leading regional firm in the Northeast. He focuses on coordinating the firm’s internal recruitment strategies and building upon Eisner’s work/life culture while continuing to strengthen the depth of expertise and diversity within the firm. Ron is also a member of the AICPA’s Minority Initiatives Committee and has generously shared his time with the MACPA supporting diversity initiatives through the High School Leaders Conferences, where he has been a speaker for the past two years.

DiBartolomeo
Richard DiBartolomeo is a CPA in Rehmann’s Troy office where he is Managing Principal, Assurance and Advisory Services. Growing up, he watched his parents set an example of volunteerism and community involvement. As an adult, Rick has continued in his parents footsteps. He has donated his time and knowledge to the Detroit Regional Chamber, the Music Hall of Detroit, The March of Dimes and many other civic and charitable organizations. Rick is also the MACPA’s nominee for the AICPA’s national Public Service Award.
Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award
Dr. Brian P. Green
Dr. Brian P. Green holds the first Richard E. Czarnecki Collegiate Professor of Accounting Chair at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. U of M-Dearborn has named him Distinguished Faculty Researcher, and also nominated him as Distinguished Teacher of the Year. He was also the 2003 recipient of the MACPA’s Accounting Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Green is this year’s MACPA nominee for the AICPA Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award. Accounting Teaching Excellence Award
Gaylord Smith
An accounting teacher for more than three decades, Gaylord Smith is Professor in the Department of Economics & Management at Albion College. Professor Smith is well respected by his colleagues, beloved by his students and is committed to making the classroom relevant to the real world by continuing his own professional education and maintaining a small consulting and tax practice. As faculty advisor to the accounting students club last year, Gaylord brought in two speakers from FASB, hosted a Meet-the-Firm Night, and conducted the IRS Adrian Project – a fraud-busting series of simulations on tax scams.
Thomas Hoatlin Award
Joe Tomczyk
This year’s Thomas Hoatlin Award is presented to Joe Tomczyk. Throughout Joe’s many years of service on the MACPA State & Local Tax Task Force, including his time as chairman, his dual experience as a long-time Treasury official and more recent experience as a professional in public practice provided unique insight into the Department and truly advanced the relationship between the Department and the MACPA.
Legislative Impact Award
State Senator Mark Jansen
Senator Mark Jansen is widely considered the thought-leader in the Michigan Senate on taxation matters. As a member of the Senate Committee on Finance and as Chair of that Committee’s Michigan Business Tax Impact Assessment Subcommittee, Senator Jansen regularly called upon MACPA members for their insight and expertise. His habit of reaching out to the resources around him, including CPAs, has brought a high level of integrity and objectivity to all he does.
Legislative Impact
Andy Couloris
The MACPA honors State Representative Andy Coulouris, sponsor of the CPA license mobility legislation. He chairs the House Committee on Banking and Financial Services, where the legislation received its hearing. Andy was instrumental in seeing the legislation through the Senate as well.
Alliance Award
Detroit Red Wings
MACPA members enjoyed the opportunity of supporting the Detroit Red Wings and the Michigan Accountancy Foundation scholarship program at the same time. Through a special program, members were provided exclusive pricing on Red Wings tickets. Five dollars of every ticket sold was donated the MAF scholarship program, raising more than $4,000.

High School Leaders Conference Planning Task Force
The MACPA’s High School Leaders Conference Planning Task Force is recognized for its success in teaching promising young high school students about the unlimited possibilities of a career in accounting through the MACPA’s High School Leaders Conferences. This past year enjoyed record-setting attendance of more than 700 attendees from 68 high schools. Plus, two new locations were added -- the University of Michigan–Flint and Walsh College, to help reach new demographics, and increase awareness among minority students. Special Recognition Award
Special Recognition Awards are given in honor of a substantial commitment to the profession through involvement in activities of particular importance to achieving the Association’s goals. Special Recognition Awards were presented to:

Gregory Nowak for being an invaluable resource for the Association and for state government officials on state tax issues.

Ian Dingwall for his cooperation and partnership with the MACPA, which has greatly helped the Association’s efforts to enhance the quality of employee benefits audits in Michigan.
