Conference Brings Small Practitioners Together for Fun and Education An event designed entirely for the MACPA’s small and sole practitioners, the Small Practitioners Conference brings these members together from across the state to partake in an exciting and educational three-day conference. This year’s conference was held from August 17-19 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo. Attendees were invited to come out Wednesday morning for a golf outing organized by MACPA member Rob Bovitz. Sessions began at 3 p.m. that day and continued through Friday, with more than 160 members in attendance. “I think it’s the No. 1 learning event,” said Bovitz of Bovitz CPA PC, who has attended the conference nearly every year for the past 20 years. “It’s unique because information is shared between practitioners. Experience exchange workshops help build camaraderie – we are all learning by giving.” Among some of the “fun” activities, members enjoyed evening entertainment on Thursday with a magician and illusionist. Friday, members were able to get up and get some fresh air by participating in the Fun Walk. “The activities add a fun element,” Bovitz said. “I look at it as a vacation. It’s a fun learning event.” In addition to the activities provided for members’ enjoyment, the educational sessions were top-notch as well. The most popular topics covered at the conference were ethics and an update on compilation and review. Several other hot topics were offered to meet the needs and interests of attendees. Those in attendance also heard a presentation from MACPA President & CEO Peggy Dzierzawski on the initiatives of the Association. Members appreciated the chance to hear about several of the successes, such as the near-completed financial resource booklet for Hospice of Michigan, the tax assistance program and several media interviews about the High School Leaders Conference. Review Dzierzawski’s PowerPoint presentation to find out more. Bovitz believes this conference is very important to the small practitioner because it provides a sounding board for them to share experiences, gain knowledge and get feedback. “You enjoy seeing these people year after year,” Bovitz said. “You have the ability to grow friendships and relationships. They are open, share ideas and communicate.” |
