Hottest CPE for CPAs this Year: New Tax, Economic Development New tax laws and economic development plans mean Michigan is in for a big change in the coming year. So, what does all of this change mean for the accounting profession in the state? Former Michigan Tax Tribunal Judge Judy Trepeck believes there is a lot of uncertainty and frustration among CPAs. The replacement of the Single Business Tax with the Michigan Business Tax opens up a whole new set of questions. “Learning a new tax law is a huge undertaking,” Trepeck explains. “It means accounting professionals are asking how and when am I going to learn all of this, what does this mean for me and my clients, especially those who have a January year-end and need to file in May 2008?” On top of the tax law change, the state is looking into new economic development plans. According to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, new plans include tax cuts, financial incentives and grants for companies looking to expand or move to the state. This means accounting professionals need to brush up on these initiatives for their clients. While learning about new tax laws and economic development plans is a challenge, there is a bright side. An upcoming all-inclusive Michigan Tax Conference hosted by the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, in partnership with the State Bar of Michigan's Taxation Section and Department of Treasury, will cover essential information for CPAs. The first day focuses on the Michigan Business Tax, offering an overview of the new law as well as technical guidance on how it applies to each facet of the profession. The second day focuses on new economic development plans in the state and how they will affect accounting professionals. Speakers for the two-day conference will include both state legislators and experts from within the accounting profession. Trepeck says, “It is the conference to be at in terms of speakers, attendees and sponsors. As an accounting professional, I will not miss it!” To register for the Michigan Tax Conference, go online or contact the MACPA’s CPE department at 248.267.3700. |
